Santa Maria del Templo (Valladolid)
Church constructed by the Templars in 12th century, it belongs in the style of transition Romanesque-cisterciense. Of ashlar masonry simple stone structure.
Villaba de los Alcores is a town located to about 25 kms from Valladolid, in direction of Villalón. This property stems from the grandfathers of the present proprietor, who bought this church in 1920 from the local landowner.
After the war there was little reason for rejoicing, and the church was dedicated to the most sacreligous use as a mill in the rear, and to grain warehouse its front half. Which has all gone now.
Santa Maria del Templo is a Romanic style church, of basilica design, The outer walls are practically flat, with great pillars and matching arches.
In the other lateral wall also there is a series of hollows with loophole forms and a small door, and has all the aspect of to have comprised part of defensive system of the city.
But surely most important, and without a doubt oldest, is the apse with its three hollows ornados with arcs of a central point, whose bays have the form of widened saeteras. The circular wall is reinforced, or rather decorated, with esbeltas finished off circular pillars with capping.
In the back part of the building a much later bell tower that has has been added.
Today this church, one of the few of this era in Valladolid, is located in the center of the town.
So get your thinking cap on… what could you do with this Fortress Church!!
