Hotel Costa Brava Castell
d' Empordà The History Castell d' Empordà is a medieval castle that dates back to the fourteenth century. Most of the present building was made in gothic style, although there are some remains of even older Romanesque architecture. The oldest document of the castle dates from the 18th of March 1301. This document tells that Mr. Pons Lluc donated the castle to Guillem de Vilagut, who later built a fortress to protect himself from his enemies. The ancient remains from this fortress can still be seen in the Northern part of the castle. In 1413, the Margarit family acquired the castle by marriage to the Sanfeliu family, and were great landowners and adventurers. Captain Margarit is well known for having served under Christopher Columbus when he discovered the new world. Presumably, Margarita Island, along the Venezuelan coastline, is named after this famous Catalan adventurer. His nephew, Francesc Margarit, known with the pet name "Serrallonga" was a kind of Catalan Robin Hood during the recession and the Black Death in the seventeenth century. The Margarit family were known for their great generosity and hospitality. Every year they held a banquet with music for the villagers. This tradition has been kept and it still takes place every second Sunday of October in the olive grove gardens. The last descendants of the Margarit family where the twin brothers. They were among the first pilots in the Spanish air force. They died at the age of 21, when their plane crashed, during the Spanish Moroccan War at the beginning of the last century. In the 70´s the surrealistic artist Salvador Dali tried to buy the castle as a present for his muse Gala. However, the negotiations failed, so he bought another castle; Castell de Púbol. Situated just 5 kilometers away, it is now a well-known museum, part of the Dali Triangle.
