Legal & Financial Help in Spain

Spain can be a minefield where it comes to the law. If you intend to sign any type of paper, whether you rent or buy a house, start a business or for any other activity, we recommend you always seek the advice of a lawyer. Lawyers are not particularly expensive in Spain and they can save you money by preventing you from making costly mistakes.

We have met many lawyers, some whom write for us on a regular basis. We can recommend a lawyer to you for every field of specialisation. The lawyers we work with are Spanish, English, French and German speaking.

Organising your financial affairs is very important when you come to live in Spain. We recommend you seek the advice of a financial consultant who can help you with your investments, property purchase, insurance requirements, setting up a will, banking requirements, etc. If you intend to set up a business in Spain, we recommend you work with a qualified accountant who can help you starting up your business, handle your business accounting and tax needs.

The best way to integrate into Spain is to speak the language. There is no way you can conduct business, make friends, deal with all the official paperwork without at least a basic understanding of the Spanish language. You may be aware that Catalan is the official language in Catalonia. All Catalans are brought up with Spanish too, therefore most foreign residents decide to learn Spanish first and maybe learn Catalan later.

Which language school you choose depends on your personal needs. If you are setting up business in Catalonia you would need to enrol in an intensive course, maybe one to one, to learn as fast as you can. To make friends and learn everyday conversational Spanish you might opt for group classes. Whether you learn the language for professional or social reasons, or because you have school going children, joining a professional language school is the best way to learn.

This page will help you to find the right language school in your area. Some language schools offer both Catalan and Spanish courses. If you can not find the school to suit your needs, please contact us.

If you're a foreign resident relocating , or are you thinking about relocation - moving - relocation to Catalunya or the Costa Brava, & need help or assistance?

There is still much confusion about who has to have a residence card and who does not. Last year the law changed with regard to resident cards for EU nationals.

European nationals who originate from countries that are members of the European Union and those from another state that are part of the "agreement on economic European Space" who are either employed or self employed on Spanish soil must conform to all the following conditions to be exempt from having a residence card: (targeta de residencia)

Persons who were employed or self employed in Spain and are now pensionable, providing they worked during the previous 12 months and have resided in Spain for more than three years. Students or self employed EU nationals and their families.
For those relocating who do not need a residence card, a passport or national identity card from their own country replaces the residence card for identification purposes.

Anybody from another European country who wants to live and/or work in Spain and does not have to get a residence card, should get a N.I.E. (Número de Identitad Extranjero).

Getting a N.I.E. number is relatively easy, all you need is a copy of your passport, with your signature certified by a notary. You can either apply for your N.I.E. number yourself or we can do all the paperwork for you.

If you are in doubt whether you need a residency card or just a N.I.E. number, please contact us.

We can organise the residency or N.I.E. process for you from start to finish.

Relocating and starting a business in Spain can be a daunting task. We have already assisted many foreigners in setting up a company in Spain. We can assist in the company foundation process:

Accompany you on visits to the "gestor" or lawyer
Assemble all necessary documentation and translation documents for you
Explain the company structures, share division, start up capital required, etc.
Act as interpreters between you and the lawyers, tax company, etc
Assist in registering for social security papers, national health, etc.
Recommend accountancy firms, lawyers, etc.

If you're planning to start up a new business in Catalunya

and would like our assistance, please contact us.

If you you are employed by a Spanish company or self-employed in Spain you are entitled to the national health service. You need to register with "Seguridad Social" in the town you are based, fill in the forms and you will receive a temporary national health card.

A few weeks later your permanent card will come through the post. You need to go to your local hospital (Ambulatorio) to be assigned with a general practioner, pediatrician and dentist. You could opt for additional private health insurance if you prefer a more flexible system, less waits and the doctor of your choice. There are various foreign health insurance companies operating in Spain.

Find the right school
Many foreigners who relocate to Catalunya have children of school age. There are three types of school systems in Catalunya:
100% state schools, Catalan is the official language and no school fees are charged. Semi-private schools, funded by the government and by private means, parents pay monthly school fees which range between 50 and 120 per month. Private schools, there are Catalan private schools and International private schools in Catalonia and on the Costa Brava. Which school is suitable for your children very much depends on your personal circumstances, the age of your children, their mother tongue, how long you are planning to stay in Spain, whether you want your children to integrate in the Catalan society or not.Our team have children at school in Spain and we have set up contacts with many semi private and private schools, Catalan as well as foreign schools. Obviously there are many foreign private schools in Barcelona with English, French, German and American curriculums. Girona also has some excellent schools, both Catalan private schools also an English private school.

If you're not sure which school would suit your children, we can assist you by assessing various schools and accompanying you on visits to schools, interpreting for you and explaining the systems.

If you need any document translated either from Catalan to English, vice versa or translations into any of the other languages, our pool of translators is available to you.
